Lovely Small Town Romance
Lucy Score has created a wonderfully sweet fake-dating romance in a charming small town with Story of My Life.
Her writing style is relaxed and humorous, and the chapter titles alone had me smiling again and again.
After separating from her husband, protagonist Hazel finds herself not only stuck in a writing slump but also losing her apartment in the heart of New York. On a whim, she buys a house in Story Lake—not just to put a roof over her head, but also in search of inspiration for her next novel. More precisely: "Camspiration."
Because her counterpart is none other than the incredibly attractive—yet equally grumpy—contractor Campbell Bishop.
The introduction to Hazel’s backstory didn’t hook me right away, but as soon as we arrived in Story Lake, I was fully immersed in the story. I found both protagonists very likeable, and their actions felt natural and relatable. Right from the beginning, you can feel the tension between them, which—combined with the quirky interactions of the other townspeople—makes for a really delightful mix!
In my opinion, the story could have been 100 pages shorter, but looking back, every scene felt like a fitting buildup to the ending. I’ll definitely be picking up another Lucy Score book soon!
