Lindsay Boxer, cool blond working mother of a cute 6 months old daughter, Julie, and wife to FBI counselor Joe Molinari, who's a full time Dad at the moment, works as a Sergeant for the Homicide Section of the San Francisco Police Department. She's "member" of the so-called Women's Murder Club, together with her friends Claire Washburn, the African-American Medical Examiner, a warm-hearted professional, Cindy, a bulldog-like reporter working for the Chronicle, and Yuki Castelano, a lawyer and future wife of Lindsay's boss Jackson Brady.
One day, fog is creeping over California and the Golden Gate Bridge, Sergeant Boxer and her younger partner Rich Conklin, get a call from Claire who's examining a car accident. So they stop their conversation on what Rich is to give his new girlfriend for her birthday, leave their car and walk through the traffic jam on San Francisco's famous bridge to a cruel crime scene.
In a red Jeep Claire had found the dead bodies of students David Katz, psychology, and Lara Trimble, music. Both of them were killed by belly bombs, as CSI specialist Charlie Clapper agrees to Claire's theory. Now, it seems as an act of terrorism is on the agenda. FBI, Homeland Security and Federal Police work on the case and close down the bridge, one of SFs main traffic routes, for 24 hours.
A week later, Boxer and Conklin still mulling over the case with only a few to no clue, Claire tells Lindsay the FBI found out that the two victims must have eaten the bombs without knowing. Some components of what they ate reacted with acids during the process of digestion, then the bombs exploded. A bag found in the Jeep leads Lindsay and Rich to a Chuck's Prime fast food restaurant, where David and Lara can be seen on the security tape buying the food that's becoming their destiny.
Who's responsible for this horrible murder? Will Lindsay, Rich, or one of their colleagues/friends be in danger? Will Lindsay come along with one of her friends marrying her boss? Will Rich come back together with Lindsay's friend Cindy, as both women hope? What is the daily working routine of the SFPD like? Will their be rivalry between FBI and the SFPD, as often told in books and TV series? Do we meet the Californian counterparts to Rizzoli and Isles, or do the characters in Unlucky 13 unfold differently? The first 5 chapters are a perfect appetizer.
