Emma Hooper - Etta and Otto and Russell and James
Emma Hooper writes lovely about the old lady Etta, her husband Otto, their friend and neighbor Russell and James, a coyote and the father of Etta's sisters unborn child.
After a long life Etta decides to walk across Canada to the East coast to finally see the water, the ocean. Her sister once lived and died in an monastery at the coast and wrote a lot about the beautiful water in long letters to Etta. Otto isn´t very lucky about her decision and her goodbye-letter but he knows one day she´ll come back and he has to wait and it´ll be ok. Their neighbor Russell isn´t ok about her and Otto's decision because he still loves Etta and isn´t pleased with his life. So Russell follows Etta in a truck an Otto stays at home, alone. When Russell reaches Etta, she already has a new friend, the coyote James, who protects her and guides her through the wilderness. So Russell decides to do what he really wants to do and drives away with his truck to watch caribous. Etta can walk on and Otto still at home takes care of a guinea pig and builds some sculptures for it and Etta.
At the same time Hooper tells the story of Etta´s and Otto's and Russell's past. It would really be a spoiler to tell everything but it is necessary to say that it´s hard to read the letters Etta and Otto were writing in the second world war, when Otto was fighting and Etta was at home with no one else to talk to than Russell. But they kept breathing.
Hooper writes so lovely, so cute and flowery. It´s an exciting adventure to read her story and to slip in the characters and to walk through Canada and the time with them. I hope I can read more by Hooper in the future because she is a really good and artistic author.
