The 13 is generally associated with bad luck thus the pleonasm spring to the eye without revealing much of what is to be expected. I personally find the rain drops also add to the rather gloomy mood since I’d also connect rain in a rather negative way.
Lindsay and her partner Rich from Homicide are called to an accident which seems strange for the Medical Examiner Claire, she has got doubts and asks for a second opinion. The scene is gruesome, the intestines of the driver and the passengers are spread everywhere and when inspecting the car, Lindsay and Rich come to the conclusion that the youngsters did not die from the accident but from bombs exploding inside them. Considering all evidence it looks rather like a terrorist attack which will soon involve national agencies to investigate why hamburgers and fries where used as weapons.
The chapters are rather short and the plot does not only focus on the accident but also provides personal information about the characters which makes them livelier. The mood created fits to the horrific scene and is neither too colloquial nor too serious.
