Two young students died in their car on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. First it looks like a normal car accident, bat later it emerged that it was a cruel cause of death. They exploded by small belly bombs, hidden in Hamburgers they have eaten before. Was it murder, suicide or an act of revenge on Chuck’s Burger? This happened just as Detective Lindsay Boxer and her friends Claire, a forensic doctor, and Cindy, a crime reporter, are preparing advocate Yuki’s wedding with Brady, who is Lindsay’s colleague and a detective as well. But that’s not all what the four women, who call themselves “The Women’s Murder Club”, have to do. There is Mackie Morales, an escaped murderer and former detective, who is on the way to San Francisco, searching Lindsay in order to kill here. And there is also a cruise liner with hundreds of passengers which was hijacked by terrorists …

Three completely different plot lines – every single exciting and thrilling – but unfortunately not really linked together. The only connection is the four women’s warm friendship and love between each other and her common interests in criminal investigation. Apart from e few unknown abbreviations the English language is not too much demanding and uncomplicated to read for not native speakers also. In spite of the unusual size, the book looks pretty good, its cover is nice, large print and very short chapters make reading comfortable. And what does the title mean? Sorry to say, nothing at all. Nowhere in the story is something to read about 13.

On balance the result is a thrilling novel, exciting and fairly entertaining with a touch of San Francisco’s local color.
